From next month's event there will be a new time control at the Golders Green rapidplays.  Each player will get 25 minutes for the game PLUS 5 seconds a move. As usual you won't have to record the game, but you can if you wish.

Why have we made the change?
Under the old time control players could claim a draw when they had less than two minutes on their clock if they felt that the opponent was a) not trying to win by normal means, or b) unable to win by normal means.
This always had unintended consequences.
It meant that players had to claim a draw even though they were a queen up, because they were running out of time, or because they had a dead draw and their opponent was just shuffling their king back and forth until you lose on time!

Will the Round Times Change?
No, we won't need more time between rounds.  This time control still gives players time to make 60 moves in 30 minutes.  An epic 100-move game will take 33 minutes and 20 seconds, which still gives us a whole 6 minutes and 40 seconds to do the draw for the next round - plenty of time!

This will lead to much better games, fairer results, and less interventions needed by arbiters ;-)
